Based on the book "Push" by Sapphire, "Precious is a movie set in 1987 Harlem about a 16-year old girl named Claireece "Precious" Jones, played by Gabourey Sidibe. She is pregnant for the second time by her absent father and is physically and emotionally abused by her mother. Life outside of home is also full of hardship; her school life is chaotic and in the 9th grade, she cannot read nor write. Although the movie is based on a poverty stricken youth, the film has seemed to avoid the usual pitfalls and cliches of movies of its genre and has been receiving rave reviews. Also starring Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, and Lenny Kravitz, "Precious" is now playing in select theaters.
