J ANAYA MOVIE PICK #2 – BAD LIEUTENANT

Released in 1992, this sleeper/cult movie is the best movie Harvey Keitel has ever done – and that’s saying a lot. Keitel is, to say the least, a crooked cop fueled by his drug, gambling and alcohol addictions finding himself digging a bigger ditch of the corrupted world he has created for himself. Even while he’s engulfed with all this, he’s still the head of a gruesome investigation involving a raped nun and making a routine traffic stop into a life altering experience for two teenage girls. Abel Ferrara did an excellent job with this movie; really reeling you into the story and making you feel the effects of how this kind of life can close in on you. This is a must have for anyone. The story, performance and the extras like Keitel’s dance performance to Johnny Ace’s “Forever My Darling” make for a perfect sleeper classic. -J. Anaya
